Blakenhall and District Village Hall News

After 10 years as Chair of the Village Hall David Lane handed over the Chair to Carol Hilton a resident of Lea. Carol brings with her a wealth of experience in management and organisation and has re-appointed the original Commitee for the remainder of 2016. Any residents interested in joining the Committee should, in the first instance contact Diane Brindley on the usual number.

The Car Park surface was starting to look very untidy over the last few months and weed control was becoming impractical. We have therefore descried to replace the surface with new hardcore which was laid in Sept 2015.

We have been awarded some funds from the Parish Council to install a street light in the Village Hall car park. The light will be time and photocell controlled and we hope will make an improvement to the ease of use and to the accessibility of the Village Hall.
Following the damage caused by the severe weather we have replaced the 4 lost ridge tiles to secure the roof and are asking for proposals to replace the lead flashing to the rear of the hall which was stolen.
In response to popular demand we are investigating, with Cheshire East Council, the feasibility of erecting a street light outside the hall to illuminate the lane to improve safety and access. We hope to implement this in 2014 subject to all parties being in support of this proposal.
We are delighted to be hosting Zosia Beigus a Polish Historian at Doddington Hall on the 23rd March. Zosia will be discussing the Post War Polish Camp which housed hundreds of Polish people just after the war and who continue to settle in and around the Crewe area.
Lady Broughton has kindly allowed us to use the grounds of the park for a Spring Walk immeadiatly after the talk.
On March 1st we held our second Barn Dance and it proved even more popular with over 60 guests attending. Our caller Steve Share provided a great nights entertainment and we raised approx £300 for the Village Hall.
Thanks got to RE Whittigham who provided the baked potatos and Helliers for the Cheese. Thanks also to the guests and committee members contributed many other flavoursome fillings.
The first 'Inter Parish Quiz Night' was held at Blakenhall in November and was an instant hit. Teams arrviced in groups from Wynbunbry, Woore, Betley and other local clubs and organisations. With a wide range of diverse topics the quiz provided a challenge for all the groups and all ages.
The next Inter Parish Quiz will be held in 2013. Watch this space!

Jan 2011: Out of the Ground
After a terrible winter of weather during which building has been unable to take place (as cement would freeze rather than set!) the building is now out of the ground and flying up. Those passing the hall will note the size and structure of it as well as some of the features that will significantly enhance the many uses of the new facility.
Dec 2010: Winter Walk
We were all pleased to see so many people willing to join us for a Winter Walk around the Doddington Estate despite the freezing conditions. The frost and mist added to the excitement and Lady Delves-Broughton allowed everyone access to Doddignton Hall for a inside view. This event proved very popular and we anticipate returning in 2011.
Nov 2010: Building Commences

After raising approx £180,000 we appointed Carwright Pond of Tarporley as the builder for the new village hall. Cartwright Pond provided the best value proposal and also recently completed a similar project at Eaton nr Tarporley.

Building commenced with the demolition of the old building and excavation of the site for the foundations of the new hall.

AUG 2010: 1940's NIGHT

During August we held one of our most enjoyable evenings around a theme of 1940's music, songs, dancing and fun to commemorate our halls passing into retirement. Due to the condition of our hall (it dates back to the period) we held the 1940's evening at Woore Victory Hall. With fish n chips provided by the Coopers Arms (great too!) everyone had a fabulous time and a significant amount was raised for the rebuilding fund.

We have received the fantastic news that Biffa have awarded our rebuilding project £50,000. This takes our total funding to over £150,000 and enables the design to be completed and construction of the new hall to commence later in the Spring of 2010.
October 09 Update: We've been awarded £50,000 from WREN
We all enjoyed a very interesting talk on the history of the Doddington Estate kindly provided by John Parkin. This very interesting and lively talk was held in the Hunt Room at Doddington kindly provided by Lady Broughton.
Imeadiatly after the talk we received the great news that WREN are providing £50,000 to our re-building fund. We now have in excess of £110,000 and eagarly await the last major piece in the funding jigsaw from BIFFA. We expect this to be presented to the BIFFAward committee in Dec / Jan 10.
September 09 Update: Lady Broughton to be Patron of Our Community Hall
We are very exited to hear that Lady Broughton has offered to be the Patron of our community hall. Lady Broughton already supports a number of local entities and we welcome her patronage. This will help our application to Wren will be reviewed in the very near future and our Biffa application due for review later in the year.
August 09 Update: Grant Applciations made ( to WREN and BIFFA)
We are pleased to say that we have made our Biffaward grant application and our Wren grand funding application. These two applications match our existing funding awarded by Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council and complete the large grant applciations that we need to secure the substantial element of the fundig for the new community hall.
Our recent Bingo night was well supported once again and the stall at the Weynbunbury Fig Pie Wakes proved that, despite the weather, the local community supports our fund raising activities.
We have an exciting opportunity to learn about the Delves-Brougton Family which will be held in the Shooting Room at Doddington Hall on the 18th Oct 2009. We hope to see you al there!

Thank you to all those who supported our bid and helped with the application and of course to Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council.
Dec 08: Update;
Over the past 12 months we have made some significangt progress with the plan to replace Our Community Hall
and having completed much of the basic groundwork and the committee have now reached the milestone of approving an outline design for new Community Hall building.
This will retain the charm and sensitivity of the timber construction and be built in appoximately the same location as the existing hall with the upgrades necessary to achieve current planning and building regualtion requirements.
Further design is now required and also the appointment of an architech to oversee the final design and planning application.
